With any MMO, ultimately at some point you have to play with others. These “others” normally take the form of a guild or clan and choosing a guild to be part of is an important choice.
Both myself and Joanne had been part of a guild for the last few weeks, for the most part there were some nice guys but boy were there some idiots too. Ultimately this left to us leaving and deciding to stay guildless until 70.
The guild itself was a fairly multi-national affair with a good mix of people. The guild leader had said from the start he wanted a mature guild but ultimately the guild was about as far from mature as is possible. Just having people over the age of 16 isn’t enough (not saying people younger can’t be mature but I digress) you have to treat immature behaviour too.
Ninety percent of guild chat was demanding or begging, crying due to being killed by Horde despite it being a PvP server, or selfishly demanded help requests. Now, I will gladly help anyone, and asking for help is a perfectly reasonable thing to do, especially in a guild. You want a nice, friendly atmosphere after all, but asking for help and then not thanking the person who responds is just plain ignorant.
And when general chat tended to be drug related, homophobic or just plain outright ignorant, it’s just not a place worth wasting your time with, no matter how “decent” the guild leader seems. With no authoritative control happening with ignorant/moronic individuals who blatantly abuse and offend, why put up with it?
Sure you want chat to have a silly friendly atmosphere, but you don’t want childish abuse and ill-thought out commentary 24/7.
My last attempt at running a guild ended up dissolving due to people not willing to take things seriously and being immature, if I attempt to create another guild it will definitely have to have stricter rules.
