Grinding Just Too Much?

April 11th, 2008 | 3 Comments | Posted in wow

crammed_in Both myself and Joanne have been discussing WoW a bit these last few days due to our subscription running out at a time when we can’t purchase time-cards immediately.

Mostly this has involved us considering whether WoW is really worth paying for at this point. I thought I’d give my thoughts here, it’d be interesting if Joanne blogged her thoughts or commented too.

Okay, my main, Twigleaf, has been a lot of fun and being my first level 70 (having only gotten Ryliana to 67 on Silvermoon-EU) I have quite an attachment to her. Being unable to find a guild not full of illiterate, moronic children (or illiterate, moronic self-absorbed adults) on Burning Steppes-EU means she is left doing mostly solo/small group stuff with Olyk (Joanne’s main). Our group of two has done a fair bit of PvP, although still not enough to have all welfare epics, and is currently grinding daily quests to obtain our epic flyer.

The thing we’ve been thinking about is, what are we going to do once we have our epic flyer?

For my part, I’m currently just logging on, doing as many dailies as I can before I get ganked to death and then logging off.

Am I enjoying doing the dailies? Sort of, is the easy answer, some of the dailies are great fun, I love doing the Skettis bombing daily, and most of the Quel’Danas dailies. They are just fun to do. But at the moment pretty much all the dailies feel like a chore, they are all quite easy and you just go through the motions. They are easy money but it’s feeling more and more like a job I guess.

But I’m not doing anything else when I log on, I’m not compelled to level an alt or do the PvP grind. It seems I’d sooner log out when the dailies are done and browse or play OpenTTD than play with one of my other alts. Even though I have one of each class at or almost at 20.

Once Twiggers has her epic mount, what then? She could continue the honour grind to get the rest of her welfare epics, but grinding away in Alterac Valley in the Nightfall battlegroup is painful, and ultimately is still as much of a grind as getting gold for the epic flyer is, except you have to deal with all the “know-it-all” experts and whiners to boot. She could max out leatherworking, but once she has her epic flyer what would she REALLY spend the proceeds on.

It feels like Twiggers has kind of hit the end of the road with stuff to do, without “normal” people to group with, the amount of content open to solo or small group players is tiny really. Maybe the reason I’m reluctant to level an alt is because they face the same future once at 70.

I love the game, I truly do, but I’m beginning to question whether I love it enough to “pay” to complete dailies each day.

Epic Flying Mount - Progress Report

April 9th, 2008 | 2 Comments | Posted in wow

Both myself and Joanne are working towards our epic flying mount, Joanne wants a Nether Ray from the Sha’tari Skyguard and I just want anything. We both have almost 3000g of the 5000g needed but we have 2000g in our shared guildĀ  bank.

Almost all of this cash has been earned doing daily quests since 2.4 along with a few hours of mote farming. The new daily quest influx that came with patch 2.4 took us from 4-ish doable daily quests to 15 as of right now. Doing all of those dailies gives you roughly 130g not counting grey vendor loot and other items obtained from questing.

We still have a chunk to get, and we WERE hoping to get our mounts by this weekend but that is looking less likely with the server drama that seems to befall the Nightfall battle group every few days.

Phase 2 - Retaking the Armory

March 30th, 2008 | 2 Comments | Posted in wow

Phased_Out Most of the European realms have progressed to phase 2 of the dailies to retake Sun’s Reach, reaching that milestone unlocked a few more dailies to take part in. My favourite new daily being [Intercepting the Mana Cells]. This involves going to Bash’ir Landing in Blades Edge, killing a bunch of ethereals to get the [Bash'ir  Phasing Device] so you can phase out (which has a wonderful graphical effect) and collect [Smuggled Mana Cell]s.

So far I’m finding 2.4 really fun, for the first time there is a lot in a patch that affects me, new dailies (including the great new fishing quests), a new 5-man (Magister’s Terrace, or MrT, which I haven’t actually done yet), a fun new zone and a way to obtain badge loot for non-raiders. Rare as a [Badge of Justice] is, I’ve had 3 so far since doing the dailies… only another 147 before I can get a weapon…

MistralquenI’ve also started a druid alt, Mistralquen, to go along with the rest of the “Quen” alts. Pallyquen, Warriquen, Priestyquen, Shammyquen, Loquen (Warlock) and Rougequen. My intent is to get all these alts to level 20-ish and then choose one to powerlevel to 70.

Who will be chosen to be that next level 70? Who knows… not even me at this stage…

Dailies, Cooking and Me

March 28th, 2008 | 2 Comments | Posted in wow

I have been looking forward to 2.4 because of the new dailies for some time, being able to get 150+ gold per day means I can see a point when I can afford my Epic Flying Mount. As you may know, to that end I’ve been levelling up my fishing and cooking to enable me to more easily complete the Cooking and new Fishing daily quests.

SSkillsWell last night I finally did it…

I’ve now maxed out all the secondary skills (except Riding, which I’m saving for now).

Also last night I managed to finally grab both the reputation I needed with the Sha’tari Skyguard to get my [Skyguard's Drape] and the honour I needed to grab the [Gladiator's Heavy Crossbow].

So YAY for ME! Now just to save for the other 3 gladiator pieces and the other PvP items….

Patch 2.4 Is Here!

March 26th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in wow

Piccy Update: Seems the patch is causing Blizzard some drama, the servers are planned to be down until 1300 CET, so 1200 GMT.

The servers have gone down for extended maintenance while patch 2.4 is rolled out. Around 10am GMT the servers will pop back into existence with a whole slew of new stuff to participate in.

Of course, drama will ensue when addons fail to work and the servers bob in and out whenever a major patch happens but 2.4 should be worth it.

Fishing daily quests are here, these are the reason I’ve tried to max out fishing over the last few days (and failing, although I’m up to 320-ish of 375, so within a day or so I’ll be at 375). These go along with the existing cooking dailies (which is the other reason I’m trying to max fishing/cooking…).

Then you have the whole of Quel’Danas to explore with the whole slew of 18 new daily quests (once unlocked), the new 5 and 25 man instances and a whole bunch of other stuff.

Lots to see and do later…

Life after 70

February 20th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in wow

Twiggers_LifeAfter70 You’d think that after hitting max level there wouldn’t be much left to occupy yourself with. You’d be wrong, dead wrong.

Twiggers dinged level 70 about 5 days ago now, and there is still so much for her to do.

As soon as we hit 70 both Olyk and Twiggers have been participating in PvP Battlegrounds to earn honour for our Season 1 Arena PvP set, also referred to as “Welfare Epics”. This is our main priority as gear is everything and even though the itemisation on the sets is predominantly PvP they make a pretty good starter PvE set too if we want to start raiding. After we have our S1 set we’ll start doing 2v2 Arena as well for at least 10 games a week.

We also started doing whatever dailies we can, at the moment that just consists of the 2 Skettis dailies for the Sha’tari Skyguard, the Honor Hold Daily PvP Quest and the Daily Battlegroup PvP Quest.

Once we have our gear we’ll be focussing on obtaining the 5,000 gold needed for our epic mount and then proceed to do various reputation grinds. After that, we’ll do our Karazhan attunement (we are both upto where we need to find a group for our first key fragment), and then see if we can cope with raiding.

So… we are busy and have LOTS to occupy us. Somewhere in there an alt will probably be getting levelled as well…

To sum up my plan…

  • Step One. Obtain Season 1 Arena Gear…
  • Step Two. Obtain 5,000g for Epic Flying Mount…
  • Step Three. Grind Reputation…
  • Step Four. Get Keyed…
  • Step Five. Do Stuff!!!
